While modern domestic tiling revolves around standard/modern tiling patterns and a simple grid system; the older and original period mosaic tiling of so many homes across Scotland and the North of England truly is something to behold. The attention to detail, care and planning to create these beautiful tiled features is truly something to behold.
Sadly however, so many of these original features have been ripped up, covered over, painted over or left in a significant state of disrepair that they have become a shadow of their former selves.
Domestic tiling restoration projects are a significant part of what we do at Were Tiling. The careful restoration of full tiling projects for front doorways, hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and more. We always work to fully restore the original tiling in order to keep the entire piece authentic. Where this simply cannot be done, we will painstakingly aim to use tiling sections that are as close to original as possible so that you simply couldn’t tell the difference.
Where tile restoration is simply not possible (because there weren’t any tiles there to begin with), our replication skills are second to none. There are lots of homeowners who want modern yet period looking tiling for their home. This can be classic Victorian style bathroom tiling to match the new sink, bathtub and toilet that complete the period look (yet are in fact brand new); or mosaic patterned front door step/entrance way that incorporates your homes house number into the design.
This modern replication tiling for domestic homes is once again, a significant part of what we do at Were Tiling.
As we always say, we are a specialist tiler. This means that we handle Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian tiling restoration and repair. So many modern tilers simply do not have the skills or patience to handle this type of tiling. Mosaic tiling requires significant planning and patience – something that we at Were Tiling are specialists at.

We were replacing a carpet in our hall and discovered the original Victorian tiling was still there. Andrew came to our home, looked at the tiling and gave us a quote with no hassle. His attention to detail and careful and methodical approach are clear in the end results. We are so delighted with the work that he has done. We never thought about having a tiled hallway but we are more than delighted with the results and it has increased the value of our home considerably.
We were looking for our Storm Door area and hallway to have a matching contemporary geometric tile design to them. We want a modern take that worked with our period Victorian home. Andrew was one of three tilers we call. He was the only one who took any measurements and really looked at the set up that we wanted. We went Were because they seemed to know what they were talking about and we were impressed with their detailed quote breakdown. It meant we knew exactly what to expect. And the end result - we could not be more happy with the end results. Our hallway looks better than ever.
