Victorian Tiler in Stirling

The gateway to the Highlands of Scotland, Stirling is a town rich with history and the former capital of Scotland.

With such a rich history, it is understandable that so many homes in Stirling are filled with beautiful, decorative Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian Mosaic and Geometric tiling.

We are Were Tiling. A historic tiling restoration firm dedicated to conservation and contemporary tiling for homes and commercial properties looking to restore or commission mosaic and geometric floor and wall tiling.

A brief history of Georgian Tiling

Georgian floor tiles are geometric ceramic/clay tiles that were created with versatility in mind. Traditionally the tiles came in a variety of shapes, sizes and often Black and White in colour. The tiles were used to create an infinite array of tessellating designs to compliment and decorate period architecture.

A brief history of Victorian Tiling

While being hard wearing and a practical solution, Victorian tiling was commonly used in homes across Stirling because it was easy to clean and it was decorative. It is why so many homes once had beautiful Victorian tiled hallways and entranceways. The easy to clean tiles made a perfect entrance for muddy shoes whilst also being visually impressive.

A brief history of Edwardian Tiling

From the 1860’s, geometric and encaustic tiled floors started to appear in public buildings, churches and the more expensive Victorian villas. Their rise to fashion was assured by their use in such prestigious buildings and by the 1890s they had become an essential feature in the most ordinary Victorian and then Edwardian terraced houses and tenement buildings.

Our Values

From design through to fabrication or repairs and restoration. We work on all types of properties from Georgian Hotels to Victorian baths and Edwardian domestic properties. Anything from private geometric hallways to bespoke mosaic entrances in public buildings and commercial properties.

WERE was an idea turned reality by Company founder and owner, Andrew. Andrew followed his Roman nose from Glasgow to Edinburgh, onto a Level 1 City and Guilds Tiling Diploma, before heading to London for a specific Victorian Tiling course with Able Skills.

This training, along with working alongside some of the very best in restoration tiling has seen Were become one of the specialists in the field.

Across Scotland and the North of England, we strive to provide aesthetics, functionality and durability in equal measure. We have a firm belief in combining traditional and contemporary tiling methods to achieve the highest standards of aesthetics in our work. We are fully qualified to British Industry Standards (City & Guilds) as well as members of the Tile Association and The Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society.

What Our Customers Say

Brian from Newcastle

We were replacing a carpet in our hall and discovered the original Victorian tiling was still there. Andrew came to our home, looked at the tiling and gave us a quote with no hassle. His attention to detail and careful and methodical approach are clear in the end results. We are so delighted with the work that he has done. We never thought about having a tiled hallway but we are more than delighted with the results and it has increased the value of our home considerably.

Andy from Glasgow

We were looking for our Storm Door area and hallway to have a matching contemporary geometric tile design to them. We want a modern take that worked with our period Victorian home. Andrew was one of three tilers we call. He was the only one who took any measurements and really looked at the set up that we wanted. We went Were because they seemed to know what they were talking about and we were impressed with their detailed quote breakdown. It meant we knew exactly what to expect. And the end result - we could not be more happy with the end results. Our hallway looks better than ever.
