WERE was an idea turned reality by Company founder and owner, Andrew. Andrew followed his Roman nose from Glasgow to Edinburgh, onto a Level 1 City and Guilds Tiling Diploma, before heading to London for a specific Victorian Tiling course with Able Skills. While in London Andrew had the great opportunity and pleasure of working with three of the best Geometric tilers in London, Gary Watt, Clodagh Ball and Ivan Staykov. They took him under their wing, put a roof over his head and passed on a life times worth of knowledge, skills and experience he brought back to Scotland with him. A special thanks has to go to Stephen King, Andrew Gillian and Craig Peebles who we met once back in the Scottish Capital. They gave us a lot of there time, wealth of experience and insider tips and knowledge, that can only be gained from a life time of Clay & Mortar. The importance of which can’t be understated.
The company and business has gradually expanded or the past few years, growing and building a known reputation in Scotland and the North of England. Being born outside Chester and then moving to the North East and Newcastle, Andrew was always surrounded and intrigued by the relics of the Roman Empire, the Deva Fort in Chester and Hardians Wall in Wallsend and across Northumberland. To now be studying Roman & Greek Mosaics one day a week at the London School of Mosaics with Dr Will Wooton, while also being taught design and fabrication by Giuila Vogrig, herself from the world renowned Mosaic School in Spilimbergo in Italy is truly inspiring.
Although a lot of our work comes through social media and word of mouth, our website plays a huge part in connecting us to potential projects all developed and run by the marvelous Mr Gordon Lundie from Lundie Media. His World Wide Web Wizardry, can’t be underestimated. Being raised in the North East from 9 years old and then moving to back Scotland, his families original ancestral home. Our ethos is to repair, restore and conserve as much of Scotland’s and the North East’s Historic tiles as possible while reinstating as much contemporary period style back into historic homes and public buildings across the country.

Andrew came to our home, looked at the tiling and gave us a quote with no hassle. His attention to detail and careful and methodical approach are clear in the end results. Andy from Glasgow We were looking for our Storm Door area and hallway to have a matching contemporary geometric tile design to them. We want a modern take that worked with our period Victorian home. Andrew was one of three tilers we call. He was the only one who took any measurements and really looked at the set up that we wanted. We went Were because they seemed to know what they were talking about and we were impressed with their detailed quote breakdown. It meant we knew exactly what to expect. And the end result - we could not be more happy with the end results. Our hallway looks better than ever.
